The cavity magnetron, the airborne radars and the … microwave oven

February 5th, 2007 by Kostakiss

The BBC web site has yet another interesting story available, as it always does. This time, it deals with the cavity magnetron, a device invented accidentally by John Randall and Harry Boot. That’s more a historical rather than a technical review. However, a detailed technical aspect of this issue is provided by Wikipedia.

I followed the link provided to BBC and I read about this invention. WOW! There is an extraordianry story behind the cavity magnetron that explains how valuable this invention was!

Interesting article. The question is, what was the most important element of the WW2, the discovery of the cavity magnetron that allowed the development of airborne radars or the decryption of the Enigma machine by the Allies that allowed the sinking of many of the german U-Boats?
